Special Services for Elderly

- Caregiving -

If the situation arises where the elderly person is unable to care for themselves, it is necessary to locate a caregiving service. The Quincy area has several caregiving services available at varying costs. Many of these services provide the care in the elderly person’s home, some of the care would be given at other locations. Care is provided on a temporary basis, part-time basis as well as full-time care. Some of the services also include some housekeeping chores as well.

Or perhaps someone in the family offers to be the caregiver. This can be a monumental responsibility and there are many locations to acquire information.. There are several stages of caregiving and you should know what to expect in each of them. The National Alliance for Caregiving offers tips, brochures, videos, and books to help the caregiver. AARP also provides a long listing of articles covering various topics associated with caregiving.

The Caregiver Information Connection in Quincy can be contacted by calling (217) 224-1223 or (800) 252-9027. This organization provides information, moral support, problem solving, and referrals for their clients. A case worker can provide information on financial support, legal assistance, respite care, personal care assistance, and many other topics. Their email address is caregiver@unitedwayadamsco.org.

The Family Caregiver Connection services such as individual and group support, needs assessment, referral to community resources and stress management techniques are available for anyone providing care to someone over 60 as well as anyone over 60 who is caring for a minor child. - Care Services -

The State of Illinois supports the Community Care Program which provides in-home and community based care to at-risk seniors. The Case Coordination Unit at 639 York, (217) 222-1189, administers the Community Care Program in the Quincy area. Several additional facilities in Quincy offer home care and assistance.

The variety of services that you can expect with in-home care include meal preparation, light housework, personal care (bath, oral hygiene, shampoo and skin care), managing finances, laundry, physical therapy, speech therapy, skilled nursing, medication management, personal laundry; shopping for essential needs and exercise assistance. For many, the use of these services provides the opportunity for the older person to remain in their own home rather than living in a nursing home.

State Services
The Illinois' Circuit Breaker Program provides assistance for elderly individuals with their medications under the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program and the application form is available online.

Meal Programs
Nutritional meals are offered through group sites such as churches, senior centers, housing facilities, and community buildings. Home delivered meals are available to seniors who do not have the ability to leave their home and fix nutritional meals for themselves.The local meals program for Quincy can be contacted at Meals Plus for Seniors, PO Box 139, (217) 224-5031.

Legal Assistance
Twenty-one locations across Illinois offer legal advice to seniors over the age of 60. They cover assistance for seniors defending themselves against fraud, abuse, neglect, benefit conflicts, landlord-tenant and nursing home rights, and also help in estate planning, living wills, and powers of attorney. Employment Programs
Seniors aged 55 and over who would like to enter or reenter the workforce can do so through a community service program. Employment usually consists of 20 hours community service for a not-for-profit organization making the minimum wage. The program is available for seniors who have limited income and are able to do tasks needed in the assignment. Volunteer Programs
The Foster Grandparents program accepts persons over 60 years old who love children and want to help kids who are disabled, troubled, or just need interaction with different generations. Volunteer work includes help with homework, speech and physical therapy, or just being a "grandparent" for the child.

Literacy programs allow seniors to assist children in reading and literacy activities. The programs promote enthusiasm and motivation to read for children kindergarten through third grade.

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program gives seniors the opportunity to use the skills they have in order to help persons in the community. Work ranges from tutoring children, building homes for low income families, making hospital visits, teaching computer skills, organizing neighborhood watch programs, helping communities recover from natural disasters, and teaching English to immigrants.

Talented Older Persons in Schools is a program designed to let seniors become role models, ensure safety in schools, and serve as tutors for kindergarten through 6th grade.

Local Services
The West Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging provides many services for the elderly including transportation; home delivered meals; legal services, congregate meals, information and assistance; Adult Day Care; a multipurpose senior center; and many others.

The Senior and Family Resource Center at 639 York, Quincy, IL, (217) 223- 5700, provides adult day care service, a craft center where one can learn various crafts, information on day trips and tours to sites of interest, and other information and assistance for senior citizens.

Blessing Hospital Day Care provides supervised care, on a full-time or part-time basis, Monday through Friday, except on holidays. Also included are meals and personal hygiene.

Adams County Homemaker Home Health Care Agency provides in-home care of individuals, homemaker service, and companion service.

The Help Line Referral Program at 224-1223 provides information and referrals on various topics. Ask your question and the service will provide the answer for you.

If it is reference information you need, the Quincy Public Library Reference Department at 223-1309 will answer your questions. They also have an Outreach Service where a volunteer from the library will deliver books of your choice and pick them up two weeks later. The library also has large print books for those who have difficulty reading regular print or if one has extreme difficulty ready, talking books are available to borrow.

County Government Programs
Adams County Extension Service has training programs in crop sciences, youth development, nutrition and wellness, a Master Gardener training course and Master Gardener volunteers that will assist with lawn and garden questions. They also supervise the 4-H programs in Adams County.

Adams County Council for Senior Citizens provides the Senior Transportation Service and the Senior Arts and Crafts Workshop as well as special scheduled activities at the Senior Citizen Center.

Adams County Department of Human Services administers the Food Stamp Program; the Emergency Food Program; aid to the aged, blind, or disabled; and nursing home services and information for couples.

Adams County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency gives aid during times of disasters such as thunderstorms, guide in case of flood or flash flood, safety information in case of tornado, and information on winter storms.

Adams County Health Department provides many services free of charge or for a nominal fee including the immunization clinic which is open on Monday afternoons.

Adams County Housing Authority helps to locate public housing for low-income families, offers flu clinics, a road refresher course, and sponsors other programs.

Adams County State's Attorney Victim/Witness Program is set up to provide many services to victims and witnesses of crimes.

RSVP of Adams County (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) for ages 55 and older aid terminally ill persons and support community policing efforts and tutor children in reading. They also deliver Meals on Wheels. Other services performed by RSVP include grocery shopping; Medicare and health insurance counseling; local and long distance medical transporting; intergenerational programs; and homeland security opportunities. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 5:00 from Labor Day to Memorial Day and 7:30 to 4:00 from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Great River Arts and Games
Every year in early June, a Fishing Rodeo is held for seniors living in nursing homes and then in early August the Senior Games are held also for seniors living in nursing homes. These activities are sponsored by John Wood Community College, the Quincy Senior Citizen Center, the YMCA, and the Quincy Park District. Contact the activity director in your nursing home for further information.

The Ms. West Central Illinois American Classic Pageant
This pageant is held annually in July for ladies aged 60 and up. Contact Sandy Callahan at the Quincy Senior Center at 224-5031 or John Wood at 641-4903.

YMCA

Gardner Museum of Architecture and Design
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. and seniors can enter at the reduced rate of $1. They are located at 4th and Maine Streets in Quincy and can be contacted by calling (217) 224-6873 or email at gardnermuseumarchitecture@adams.net.

The Marion Gardner Jackson Library at 1125 Hampshire Street in Quincy has a collection of large print books and other books and magazines in cooperation with the Quincy Public Library.
