- Physicians and Other Health Care Professionals -

Doctors
Our relationship with our personal physician is one that becomes increasingly important as we become older. One who understands our physical conditions can better understand and diagnose the symptoms we may have. Once this relationship has been established it is difficult when we must move away and find a new doctor or several new specialists. Therefore, we need to do some research in regard to selecting a physician. What are their credentials? how long have they been practicing? have they ever been sued for malpractice? Personal referrals are helpful when you know the people giving the referrals and these are all questions we need to ask.

There are some excellent sites on the internet that will help find out if your physician has a criminal record or problem with the law. The individual State Medical Boards provide information on doctors who have been disciplined by state medical boards and federal agencies in the past ten years and the disciplinary actions taken. There is a fee for this service. Quackwatch.com has an extensive listing of websites pertaining to the problems of medical fraud. Their purpose is to combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies with a primary focus on quackery-related information.

The Federation of State Medical Boards or doc info provide web addresses, mailing addresses and phone numbers for state boards. A search can be completed for specific physicians for $9.95 per report. The Administrators in Medicine is a free site which provides licensing background, malpractice, criminal conviction and disciplinary information of physicians and health care practitioners from state government licensing boards. And last, but not least, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General has an online database of information on doctors, hospitals and other groups not participating in federal health programs because of fraud, patient abuse, licensing board actions, and default on loans.

Local area Physicians & Surgeons and all of the medical specialties are listed in this link. To search for a doctor according to practice, visit the Switchboard Yellow Pages.
