Memorial Day through Labor Day: The Antique Auto Museum at All America Park in Quincy is open every Sunday. The hours are 12:00-4:00pm. There is an admission charge of $2.00 for adults.

Memorial Day through Labor Day: Nauvoo Adventure, Monday through Saturday, 3:30p.m. and 6:30p.m. Visitor’s Center Theater. A 70-minute musical drama. Admission is free, but ticket is required. Nauvoo, IL., (888) 453-6434

July through August: Historic Nauvoo Pagent. The Nauvoo Pageant celebrates the legacy of early Latter-day Saints whose faith brought them to a swampy bend of the Mississippi River. Narrated by Parley P. Pratt, the pageant emphasizes the prophetic mission of Joseph Smith and honors the sacrifice, faith, and courage of the Saints who gave their all to build a city and a temple. The pageant is filled with authentic hymns and folksongs, lively dances, and tender moments that share the joy these early Saints found. Through words taken from journals, sermons, and historic records of the period, the pageant invites all to feel the powerful testimonies of these faithful Saints. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday nights at 8:45 p.m. with pre-show activities beginning at 7:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is adjacent to the pageant grounds.

Thanksgiving Day - New Years Day: Avenue of Lights is a beautiful drive-through holiday light display. This spectacular animated display, lining two miles of Moorman-Wavering Park is new and different each year. Nearly 375 pieces, will combine to make over 100 display groupings. September 1: United Way Restaurant Days featured restaurant is Buffalo Wild Wings , 6124 Broadway. When you dine here today a percentage of your check will be donated to the United Way.

September 2: Annual Memory Walk for the Quincy Area Alzheimer's Association. Clat Adams Park will be the site of the 14th Annual Memory Walk with registration beginning at 5:00p.m. The walk begins at 6:00. Individuals and teams who preregister by August 20th will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Gas card. The Quincy Branch will have a preregistration table Friday, August 20th, at The Butcher Block, from 11:00 – 2:00 p.m. and individuals who register that day will qualify for the drawing.

The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk is an empowering event that gives participants an opportunity to be Champions by taking action and raising funds to fight Alzheimer’s. In addition to the 1.5 mile or 3 mile walk, participants will enjoy a free picnic, compliments of County Market, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Master of Ceremonies will be Y101 personality Jeff Dorsey; Guest speaker for the event will be Signe Oakley.

Presenting Sponsor is Good Samaritan Home of Quincy; Major Sponsors include Blessing Hospital, Gardner Denver, Inc., Knapheide Mfg.; St. Vincent’s Home, and Sunset Home. Prizes will be awarded to individuals raising the most money, the team raising the most money, oldest and youngest walker, and to the top raising nursing home.

Walkers can purchase a 4” mum for $5 in honor or in memory of a loved one. Mums will be displayed at the walk.

September 3: Alzheimer's Association presents Free Monthly Lunch & Lecture Series for Caregivers. Program will be on Dialogue on Diabetes presented by Loretta Musholt, R.N., Certified Diabetic Educator with Blessing Hospital Education Services, at the Quincy Senior Center, 639 York. Lunch will be served at 11:45a.m. and the one-hour program will begin at noon. Reservations are required by Tuesday prior to the program. There will also be free respite care available through the Adult Day Care Center at the Senior Center. Advance registration is required for respite care. September 4: Gardner Museum Walking tour from 10-noon. The walking tour will begin at 7th & Adams.Tour goers will learn about St. Mary’s church and its environs. This part of Quincy’s southend German Historic District is very important to Quincy’s history. Cost is $5 per person, members of the museum are free. Reservations are not required, just show up a few minutes before 10 a.m. The tours take place rain or shine, unless there is lightening. Occasionally building owners open their structure for everyone to tour, so the ability climb stairs is required. For information call 224-6873.

September 9, 16, 23, 30, Oct 7 & 14:The Alzheimer’s Association – Quincy Area Branch is looking for individuals in their 40’s and older and healthy seniors to participate in a new healthy aging program, “Train Your Brain,” to begin September 9th. The six-week program will meet Thursdays, Sept. 9th – Oct. 14th, from 6:00 – 7:30 pm, at the Quincy Senior & Family Resource Center, 639 York Street.Each week will feature a brain related topic and a guest speaker.

Sept. 9: Now What Was I Saying? A public health and education program that teaches participants steps they can take now to make brain health one of the overall goals of the healthy aging process. September 10 & 11: The Quincy Exchange Club is hosting the Annual Illinois State Championship "Smoke On The River" Bar-B-Que Contest. The event takes place at Kesler Park on the Quincy Riverfront from 5pm -11 pm. Friday and 10am on Saturday, the best bar-b-q chefs in the Midwest get the grills hot in the competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society - all for a cash purse of $1,000 - and a chance to advance to the American Royal in Kansas City. There are plenty of fun activities for the entire family and you'll hear from some of the best blues bands in the land playing until late in the night. Art Spectacular is held outside on the lawn of beautiful Washington Park near the Carillon in Springfield, IL. September 16: Individuals in the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers are invited to participate in the monthly meeting of Memory Café, to be held from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. at the Quincy Senior and Family Resource Center, 639 York Street. September 16: Cooks Night Off helps support the Meals on Wheels Program while allowing you to enjoy a delicious meal at a reasonable price. Every third Thursday throughout 2009 from 4 -6p.m. Meals Plus for Seniors will offer eat-in, carry-out or drive through (on north side of building) meals for $6 each. Those who choose to eat at the Senior Center, 639 York, will receive a complimentary beverage with their meal. All meals include an Entree', starch, vegetable, bread and dessert. September 18: The YWCA Quincy is pleased to partner with the Quincy Human Rights Commission on the 4th Annual Cultural Festival Saturday, from 11:00 to 6:00 pm. The festival will take place at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Plaza at Quincy City Hall and will feature live music from a variety of local artists including Ben Bumbry and the Messengers as well as Blue Grass, Gospel, Rock and Rap styles. Ignacio Aguiano will provide Latin dance lessons and a brief history of the traditional dances of Mexico. Local artists will demonstrate henna painting and sushi making, while presentations on Japanese and Iranian culture will take place in the exhibit area. Multi-media displays from the New Philadelphia project will compliment the Quincy African-American Heritage exhibit. A selection of ethnic cuisines from the Soul Food to Greek, Bosnian to Indian and other specialty items will be available from local vendors. Kids will enjoy the Art Corner and Bounce House. September 19: Arts/Quincy Riverfest. Entertainment, fine arts, crafts, and folk art held at Clat Adams Park. Riverfest is sponsored by WQJC-LP FM radio, the Quincy Park District and Quincy Society of Fine Arts. The festival on Quincy’s riverfront features the Family Fun Zone, with hands-on art activities for children and three stages of entertainment. Either a physician or a health care professional presents each topic. Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive degenerative disease of the brain, can cause changes in the individual that can lead to frustration and anxiety for his or her caregiver.Participants in support groups receive emotional support, practical assistance in coping with the numerous problems they face, and the latest information about research, community programs and other services available for caregivers. Thanksgiving Day - New Years Day: In the ten years since the gates of Moorman-Wavering Park opened to reveal the magic of the Christmas season, over a half-million guests have enjoyed the drive through the Avenue of Lights.

Volunteers work year round to not only update the beautiful displays you have seen in past trips through the Avenue of Lights, but more than 10,000 volunteer hours go into the planning and building of new displays to make certain each year visitors will see a new show! Members of the Avenue’s board visit vendors and outdoor light displays all over the nation looking for new ideas and better ways to bring displays to life! The electronic wizardry utilized by the Avenue of Lights’ volunteer crew, has created what many believe is the “most animated Christmas Park in the Midwest!”

Whether you’ve been our guest in past years or you’re making the breathtaking drive for the first time, create a wonderful Christmas memory for your entire family this year at the Avenue of Lights. Open nightly in Moorman-Wavering Park from 6-9:30, Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s. Admission is $7 per vehicle. No vehicles larger than 15 passenger vans will be permitted to avoid damage to park roads.

December -all month: The Alzheimer’s Association, Quincy Area Branch, is selling the 2010 fourth in the series hand blown holiday ornament by regional artist Hiram Toraason during the holiday season. The limited-edition ornament is especially designed for the Central Illinois Chapter with shades of purple and platinum with a touch of aqua. This year he has added a touch of white for an entirely new look and added dimension.

The ornament is available at the office located at the Quincy Senior and Family Resource Center, 639 York Street, Room 200; Quincy Steamboat Company, 833 Kentucky; and Granite Bank Gallery, 428 Maine Street.

December 4: Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis. Quincy Mall at 10:00a.m.. The 20th annual certified 5K Run/Walk and Fun Walk for Arthritis includes an awards ceremony and door prize give-away. Participants are encouraged to form teams and raise funds for the Arthritis Foundation. They receive Jingle Bell Run T-shirts with sponsor logos, jingle bells for their running shoes, a “goodie bag”, and a Race Day Journal with health related articles, advertisements, event information. December : Alzheimer's Association Presenting Nuts & Bolts of Alzheimer’s Disease.The Quincy Area Branch Alzheimer's Association will host a day long program about Alzheimer’s disease that will let caregivers pick and choose from up to eight 30-minute sessions designed to improve their knowledge and care giving skills.
Entitled, “Nuts and Bolts, the Hardware of Alzheimer’s Disease,” the program will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Quincy Senior and Family Resource Center, 639 York Street. It is free and open to the public and is funded, in part, by the West Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

The program includes eight 30-minute sessions and individuals can attend as many sessions as they prefer. They are:

Behaviors 9:45 – 10:15 a.m.
Communication 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.
Chapter Services 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.
Questions & Answers on AD 12:30 – 1:00 p.m.

Caregiver Support 2:45 – 3:15 p.m.

Registration is required. Individuals can also register for Medic Alert + Safe Return, a 24-hour emergency response system for wandering and medical emergencies. Grant funding through Dot Foods is available to cover the $49.95 fee. February : Underground Railroad Facts and Lore in Payson, Illinois. The Gardner Museum of Architecture and Design invites everyone learn about the underground railroad in Payson, Illinois and surrounding areas at the museum, 332 Maine, on Sunday, February 28 at 2 p.m. The presentation is free for members of the museum and $5 for non-members. This is the third in a series of tours or presentations about the Underground Railroad in conjunction with Black History Month. Some of Payson’s citizens were sympathetic to the plight of the abolitionists in their efforts to guide slaves to freedom. The Payson Congregational Church was instrumental in the story and many of its members were involved. The presentation will feature photographs and drawings of a few of the buildings and individuals involved in the underground railroad. There will also be a map and information about the sites so that individuals can check them out at their leisure following the presentation. Members of Ruth Deters family will be on hand to talk about her findings and her book will be for sale following the presentation. August & : Ethan’s Rodeo is a two day rodeo to raise money for neuroblastoma research in memory of Ethan Weiman. Ethan lost his battle at the young age of 5. Neuroblastoma is a childhood cancer that accounts for 8% of all childhood cancer diagnoses and 15% of all childhood cancer deaths. Ethan Weiman fought neuroblastoma from 2007-2009. In 2010, Ethan’s family and friends continue the fight and pay tribute to the greatest cowboy ever with the establishment of Ethan’s Rodeo. Ethan’s Rodeo features award winning livestock and contestants, pyrotechnics, special events for kids and kids at heart, and quality local food vendors.
