The Illinois Veterans' Home (1707 North 12th Street) is beautifully situated on a 200 acre campus just Northwest of Twelfth and Locust Streets in Quincy, Illinois. Along with Veterans' Homes at Manteno, LaSalle, and Anna, it is operated by the Department of Veterans' Affairs.

The primary mission of the Illinois Veterans' Home is to provide domiciliary and nursing home care for eligible veterans, spouses of veterans, and spouses of deceased veterans. The Home provides domiciliary, intermediate, and skilled nursing to about 600 residents.

The campus is a virtual community in itself, including residential barracks, a dementia/alzheimer unit, support services, including dietary, physical therapy, activities, social services, pharmacy, laundry, chaplain, security, medical records, X-ray, housekeeping, shoppers, barbers, and a beautician, as well as a post office, bank, library, coffee shop, and a deer park.

Friends and relatives of residents are encouraged to visit them. The R. E. Northern Guest House provides comfortable rooms at very reasonable rates. The stay is limited to three nights unless extended by the adjutant in case of serious illness or emergency. Reservations can be made by calling the Home's operator at 217/222-8641 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Eligibility Requirements. Any honorably discharged veteran is entitled to admission to the Illinois Veterans' Home at Quincy if he or she: (1) has served in the armed forces of the United States at least one day in World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Campaign or the Persian Gulf Conflict between the dates recognized in the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs or between any other present or future dates recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs as a war period for purpose of eligibility for domiciliary or nursing home care; or (2) has served on active duty in the armed forces for one year for purpose of eligibility for domiciliary care only; and (3) has service accredited to the State of Illinois or has been a resident of Illinois for one year immediately preceding the date of application; and (4) is disabled by disease, wounds, or otherwise, and because of disability is incapable of earning a living. 20 Illinois Compiled Statutes 2805/2.01. The most recent marriage of a spouse or widow of an honorably discharged veteran must have been for at least five years.

Maintenance Charges. Charges are based on income, not on the resident's assets. The maintenance charge is 90% of the total monthly income less $100.00. The maximum charge is $929.00 regardless of income. Veterans and spouses living at the Home will each pay maintenance charges based upon one-half their combined income. Each is entitled to the $100.00 exclusion. Inability to contribute to the cost of care does not prevent admission to the Home.
