Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1958 and covers more than 8,500 acres of land near the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.
Two Rivers is broken down into five divisions: Apple Creek, Batchtown, Calhoun, Gilbert Lake, and Portage Island. These divisions lie within a major waterfowl migration corridor and are an important source of food and shelter for more than 200 different bird species that travel through the corridor on their migration routes.
Nearly 1,000 bald eagles winter on the lands within the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge. There are 30,000 visitors annually who come to observe the wildlife as well as enjoy recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hiking, and hunting.
