Sanganois State Fish & Wildlife Area

Located in northern Cass County, Sanganois State Fish & Wildlife Area covers more than 10,300 acres near the confluence of the Sangamon and Illinois Rivers. This wildlife area is a combination of sloughs, lakes, ponds, timberland, and cropland that provides the ideal environment for a wide variety of birds, fish, and other area wildlife. This land, prior to its purchase, was a series of private duck clubs. The wildlife area continues to be a hunter’s paradise.

Sanganois has a heron rookery with nearly 1,000 nests. Wildlife observation and bird watching are popular activities for visitors. Winter months provide a great opportunity for viewing bald eagles in tree tops along the river banks.
