Sand Ridge State Forest

Illinois’ largest state forest, Sand Ridge State Forest, was created in 1939 and covers 7,500 acres in Mason County. The forest supports a variety of desert plants and animals, one of few places in the Midwest that support such a unique ecosystem.

There are nearly 45 miles of trails that run through Sand Ridge for hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. Camping facilities are available for guests with horses as well as those without horses. Hunting and picnicking are also activities enjoyed by forest guests.
