Rend Lake

Rend Lake is Illinois’ second largest manmade lake and a very popular recreation site in southern Illinois. Rend Lake was created to supply water to a two-county area as a result of drought conditions. Construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1971. Today, the 18,900-acre reservoir supplies water to more than 300,000 people in seven counties while providing a recreational outlet to millions of visitors each year.

The lake is surrounded by 21,000 acres of public land and has 162 miles of shoreline. There are six major recreation areas around the lake. The area around the lake is virtually commercial-free and undeveloped, adding to the natural beauty of Rend Lake.

Visitors should consider stopping by the lake’s visitor center located at the south end of the lake. Lake brochures are available as well as trained staff who can answer any questions you may have. The visitor center is a learning resource as well. There is a 250-gallon fish tank, a collection of snakes, and other exhibits that help you learn about Rend Lake and the surrounding area.

Beaches, picnic shelters, hiking trails, campgrounds, a 27-hole golf course, a marina, and resort are located around the lake. The Rend Lake Resort is located on the lake and offers cabins, hotel rooms, boat facilities, and much more. Fishing, boating, swimming, and hunting are popular activities with lake guests.
