Pyramid State Recreation Area

Pyramid State Recreation Area is Illinois’ largest recreation area measuring 19,701 acres, twice as big as the second largest recreation area, Pere Marquette State Park. Pyramid State Recreation Area was created in 1968 when the Pyramid Coal Company sold an unreclaimed strip mine in Perry County to the State of Illinois. Recent additions have added size and recreational wealth to Pyramid State Recreation Area.

There are 30 ponds and lakes that range in size from less than 1 acre to more than 200 acres. Some have the ability to accommodate boats while others are only accessible by a healthy hike. Bass and bluegill are among the more popular catches. There are more than 16 miles of trails that run through Pyramid’s forest area for horseback riding, hiking, and biking. Additional activities include picnicking, camping, canoeing, and hunting.
