Piney Creek Ravine State Natural Area

Piney Creek Ravine Natural Area is a 198-acre dedicated nature preserve that was established in 1972. The nature preserve is home to a wide variety of plant and tree life including several rare species. Piney Creek is one of two locations in Illinois where short-leaf pines grow naturally.

Also unique are the nearly 200 rock art designs found at Piney Creek. It is the largest collection of prehistoric rock art in Illinois and dates back to 500 A.D. The art collection includes carvings of human figures, animals, and other items that have survived centuries to exist today.

Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, and wildlife observation. After a significant rainfall, the creek turns into a 2-mile thrill ride for kayaking.
