Peabody River State Fish & Wildlife Area covers 2,200 acres in St. Clair County. A large portion of this park was formerly part of a coal mining site that was surface mined from the 1950's to the 1980's. The Peabody Coal Company gave 1,800 acres to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources who then created the Peabody River State Fish & Wildlife Area.
This park has numerous lakes and ponds that attract a large number of migratory birds. Park visitors can choose from boating, fishing, hunting, picnicking, and wildlife observation for their recreational choices.
