Mermet Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area was created in 1962 when an old cypress swamp was transformed into a 460-acre lake for waterfowl hunting. The wildlife area covers 2,630 acres and hosts a large population of local wildlife, birds, and plant life.
The lake is closed for waterfowl hunting seasons during portions of October, November, and December. The wildlife area, during the remainder of the year, provides several recreational activities for its visitors such as picnicking, fishing, hiking, boating, and birdwatching. There are two hiking trails that include tree identification markers and a boardwalk that extends into the swamp area.
