Lake Murphysboro State Park was created in 1948 when the State of Illinois acquired 1,022 acres of land two miles west of Murphysboro in Jackson County. Two years later, in 1950, the Illinois Division of Fisheries created the 145-acre Lake Murphysboro. Fishing is a very popular activity among park guests. Bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and sunfish are the predominant varieties of fish found at the lake. Anglers may choose between fishing from the shore, pier, or their own boat.
Visitors to Lake Murphysboro State Park will find the park is home to several varieties of wild orchids. Park activities include picnicking, camping, hiking, and boating. The park also has an archery range for its visitors to use.
