Kickapoo State Recreation Area

Kickapoo State Recreation Area is a beautiful example of nature’s ability to recover. Kickapoo was formerly the site of a strip mine and was purchased by the State of Illinois in 1939. Today, the 2,842-acre park in Vermilion County has been transformed into a beautiful outdoor playground.

Twenty-two ponds and lakes cover more than 220 acres at Kickapoo. Bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and sunfish are among the popular catches. Two of the deep water lakes are available for scuba diving, a unique opportunity in Illinois.

The park’s riding stable offers horse rentals and guided trail rides for guests. A birdwatching checklist is available at the park office and includes more than 100 bird species. Other recreational activities at Kickapoo include biking, camping, hiking, hunting, and picnicking. The park’s concession area offers canoe and kayak rentals, bait, food, and much more.
