Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park

Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park is located on a glacial moraine in Henry County just 7 miles north of Kewanee. Named after an Illinois state senator, Frank Johnson, and the Sauk Indians who inhabited the area, this state park is an excellent recreational outlet.

With more than 1,360 acres, Johnson-Sauk is home to an abundant wildlife population for those who like to hunt. Wild turkey, white-tail deer, pheasants, and dove are among the game available at this park. For those who enjoy fishing, the 58-acre Johnson Lake and the 3-acre Sauk Trail Pond offer anglers a chance at bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, northern pike, and muskie.

Recreational activities include boating, camping, hiking, and picnicking. There are 15 miles of hiking trails that double as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails in the winter months. In addition, winter guests can also ice skate and fish on Johnson Lake.

Johnson-Sauk is home to one of the largest round barns in the United States. Standing 80 feet high with a diameter of 85 feet, Ryan’s Round Barn was erected in 1910 and still stands as an incredible architectural site. The barn is available for tours by calling the park office at (309) 853-5589.
