Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish & Wildlife Area was established in 1993 when the Illinois Department of Natural Resources bought 16,550 acres of land from Commonwealth Edison. The energy company had acquired the land in the late 1960's and early 1970's with the intentions of building an electric plant on the site.
Also known as “Site M,” Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish & Wildlife Area covers 26 square miles of woodlands, prairies, croplands, and wetlands. The park also includes three lakes and seven ponds.
Park guests can choose from activities such as boating, camping, fishing, hunting, and picnicking. There are 17 miles of trails for guests to hike or mountain bike. Equestrian trails traverse 26 miles of this beautiful wildlife area.
