Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area -Alexander County)

Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area in Alexander County started out as a 49-acre bird sanctuary in 1927. Horseshoe Lake was created in 1930 and covers 2,400 acres of water with 20 miles of shoreline. Bald cypress, tupelo gum, and swamp cottonwood trees surround the lake and create a memorable view.

Today the wildlife area covers more than 10,000 acres and serves as a winter sanctuary for 150,000 Canada geese. Besides birdwatching, visitors to Horseshoe Lake can camp, fish, boat, hunt, and picnic.

Directions:
From Cape Girardeau, Missouri, take Highway 146 east 3 miles then go south on Highway 3 for 12 miles to Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area.

From Marion, take Interstate 57 south for 53 miles to exit 1. Take Highway 3 northwest 7 miles to Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area.
