Frank Holten State Recreation Area

Located in close proximity to downtown St. Louis, Frank Holten State Recreation Area was established in 1964 and has grown to cover 1,080 acres. This urban park provides a surprisingly large number of activities as well as abundant plant and wildlife.

Guests can tee up for a round of golf on the park’s 18-hole golf course. The park is also home to two lakes, Whispering Willow Lake and Grand Marais Lake, whose combined size is 208 acres. Boats are allowed on the lakes and the fish population includes bass, bluegill, and catfish.

Recreational activities include soccer, football, track, basketball, and softball. There are also picnic facilities as well as a concession stand with refreshments.

Directions:
From Springfield, go south on Interstate 55 for 90 miles to East St. Louis and follow the signs to Frank Holten State Recreation Area.

From Effingham, go west on Interstate 70 for 92 miles to East St. Louis and follow the signs to Frank Holten State Recreation Area.

From Mt. Vernon, go west on Interstate 64 for 74 miles to East St. Louis and follow the signs to Frank Holten State Recreation Area.
