Coffeen Lake was constructed in 1963 to serve as a cooling source for a local power plant. In 1986, 23 years later, Coffeen Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area was opened and has become Montgomery County’s premiere fishing spot. The heat generated by the power plant enables year round fishing. There are 22 species of fish in Coffeen Lake with bass, catfish, and crappie as the most popular choices. The lake has 50 miles of shoreline that is surrounded by a beautiful hardwood forest. The wildlife area also includes wetlands and prairie. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, hunting, picnicking, and wildlife observation.
