In 1947, the State of Illinois began acquiring land in Fulton County along the Illinois River and established Anderson Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area. Today, Anderson Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area covers 2,267 acres and contains two lakes. Anderson Lake is the larger lake measuring 1,134 acres and Carlson Lake, at 250 acres, is utilized for waterfowl food and shelter. This park is an excellent place for duck hunting.
Anglers find healthy populations of bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. In winter months, park guests are guaranteed a view of bald eagles who winter there. Boating, camping, picnicking, and wildlife observation are other popular recreational activities at Anderson Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area.
