Wakonda State Park _________________________

General description - Wakonda State Park contains 1,050 acres and lies three miles South of LaGrange, just off US 61, close to the Mississippi River in the Northeast part of Missouri. This is the only Missouri park that contains sand prairies which, though once common, are nearly extinct. In addition, it contains six lakes throughout the park. Its lakes are a stopping and resting point for waterfowl during the spring and fall migratory seasons. The campground is open year round.

Getting there from Quincy, IL - Take US 24 from Quincy to US 61 (Taylor, MO); go North 5 miles on US 61 to Rt B (La Grange), take the inner road South ½ mile to Park Entrance.

Activities - Fishing, swimming, hiking, volleyball, camping, picnicking, bird watching, activities are available.

Recreational trailers - There are ten 35 ft. "park model" trailers, each with two double beds, a set of bunk beds, air conditioning, full size bathrooms, showers, sinks, refrigerators, and microwave ovens. No smoking or pets are allowed inside. Camping - There are 82 campsites, 60 are electric (yellow posts) and 22 are basic (green posts). Reservable sites are indicated by a red sign with an R. Four sites are ADA Accessible. Campsite reservations are available by calling 1-877-ICAMPMO (1-877-422-6766) 7a.m. to 10p.m. seven days a week or visit www.mostateparks.com 24 hours a day/seven days a week. Boating - Six lakes are provided throughout the park for fishing. No boats are allowed on Jasper Lake. There is a Ten Horse Power maximum engine limit on Agate and Wakonda Lakes, which have boat launches. Agate Lake has a handicapped-accessible boat dock.

Fishing - (pole and line only) The favorite fish are large mouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. There are also some carp, drum, buffalo, and paddlefish. Due to the 1993 flood, there are also some walleye and sauger, with even a 39 inch northern pike caught in Agate Lake in 1999.

Boat rental - Jon boats and Canoes (Wakonda Lake has 6 jon boats and Agate Lake has 4 jon boats and 3 canoes) are for rent, 2 hour minimum, at the Park Office. Life jackets and oars are provided. Rentals permitted from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm (except for overnight guests).

Swimming - There is a free beach, without lifeguards, at Wakonda Lake, open 10a.m. to 8p.m. 7 days a week. A fast food/snack bar is available from Memorial Day to Labor Day, weather permitting. Concession hours are 11a.m. to 6p.m. Friday, Saturday, & Sunday.

Notice - This facility is gated. Access is controlled by an electronic gate between the hours of 10p.m. and 7a.m.

Do not collect firewood.
