Recreation St. Louis’ Forest Park was created in 1876 from 1,370 acres of land located west of downtown St. Louis. Forest Park served as a city park until 1904 when it was the site for the 1904 World’s Fair. The fair lasted seven months and its attendance surpassed 20 million visitors. Today, the park hosts more than 10 million visitors annually. Attractions at Forest Park include the St. Louis Art Museum, The Muny, The Jewel Box, the St. Louis Science Center, the St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis History Museum, and much more. Jefferson Barracks Historic Park is a 425-acre St. Louis County Park perched upon a Mississippi River bluff. Its rich military history started in 1826 when Jefferson Barracks was established as the country’s first basic training camp. It served as a United States Army Post until 1946 and was a major induction center during war times. Jefferson Barracks is also the site of the first successful parachute jump from an airplane in 1912. Today, visitors to Jefferson Barracks Historic Park can view the National Cemetery, the Civil War Museum, and the visitors center. Recreational activities, picnic areas, and trails also exist at the park. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Jefferson Barracks is located at 533 Grant Road.
