St. Louis, Missouri _____________________ Calendar of Events History Built on a bluff a few miles south of the confluence of the Missouri The new settlement grew quickly and by 1765 St. Louis had 300 residents. First a French territory, St. Louis later became Spanish-owned until it became part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and a territory of the United States. By 1804, St. Louis had more than 1,000 residents. In the 19th century, St. Louis became a gateway to the West which allowed it to become the center of commerce and trade for the region. The first steamboat arrived in 1817 and St. Louis became a hub for Mississippi River trade. Between 1840 and 1860, the population exploded with new immigrants and the population growth resumed after the Civil War. St. Louis’ location combined with its rail and water transportation routes propelled the city to become a major industrial center in the Midwest.
