History

Built on a bluff a few miles south of the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, St. Louis has a long, rich history. It was founded in 1763 by Pierre Laclede when he was scouting a site to build a fur trading post. He named the site St. Louis after Louis IX of France and the first settlers to arrive in St. Louis were French.

The new settlement grew quickly and by 1765 St. Louis had 300 residents. First a French territory, St. Louis later became Spanish-owned until it became part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and a territory of the United States. By 1804, St. Louis had more than 1,000 residents.

In the 19th century, St. Louis became a gateway to the West which allowed it to become the center of commerce and trade for the region. The first steamboat arrived in 1817 and St. Louis became a hub for Mississippi River trade. Between 1840 and 1860, the population exploded with new immigrants and the population growth resumed after the Civil War. St. Louis’ location combined with its rail and water transportation routes propelled the city to become a major industrial center in the Midwest.

There is so much to experience in St. Louis . . . its history, the arts, great entertainment, cultural events, family attractions, and so much more.
