Lake Springfield, located southeast of Springfield, is the largest municipally owned lake in Illinois. The 4,235-acre lake provides visitors with eight public parks, the Henson Robinson Zoo, and the Lincoln Memorial Gardens. As a recreational outlet for the Springfield area, Lake Springfield offers boating, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. Over half a million visitors come to Lake Springfield annually.

Sangchris Lake State Park was named for Sangamon and Christian counties. Located just east of Springfield, this 3,022-acre state park offers five miles of equestrian trails as well as hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, and boating on Sangchris Lake.
