History
Rockford was founded in 1834 by Germanicus Kent on the west side of the Rock River. Rockford attracted a large number of immigrants in its early days. In 1852, the railroad came to town and connected Rockford to Chicago, opening new markets of trade. By 1860, Rockford had established itself as a thriving industrial center and continued to attract immigrants.
