Dr. William W. Mayo moved to Rochester in 1863 to serve as a surgeon in the Union army. After the Civil War had ended, Dr. Mayo and his family stayed in Rochester. He began his private practice and became a leading pioneer physician in the Midwest. In 1883, William J. Mayo joined his father’s practice and five years later his brother, Charles Mayo followed. The trio helped to transform surgery from a risky procedure to a common practice of modern medicine. They performed surgeries with unprecedented success. From goiters to tumors, most life-threatening conditions became curable with the Mayos. They received referrals from all over the Midwest. As their practice grew, so did their expertise. The more cases they saw, the more they operated, and the better they became. Both brothers died in 1939 but their legacy lived on as several of their children followed in their footsteps.
