Recreation Built on an abandoned rail bed, the River Trail of Illinois offers hikers and bikers a scenic look at the area east of Peoria. There are more than 10 miles of trail for all to enjoy. The park provides a unique opportunity for visitors to experience plants and wildlife that are native to Illinois. Attractions include lakes, prairie land, a butterfly garden, and a pioneer homestead that portrays life in the early 1800's. The park’s wildlife includes black bear, bison, cougars, and wolves. This nature preserve offers 7 miles of scenic hiking trails, a natural history museum and bird watching opportunities. The Forest Park Nature Center is located at 5809 Veterans Drive.
