History
In 1827 during a poker game in New Orleans, John Talbot won the title
to a tract of land in Illinois. Talbot, a Kentucky plantation owner, decided
to go to Illinois to see what he had won. Upon arriving, Talbot saw a
land with rich, black soil and wide-open prairies. Located between the
Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, the area was irresistible. Talbot went
back to Kentucky and gathered a group of friends who returned with him
and settled what is known today as Monmouth.
