Famous Residents
Wyatt Earp is undoubtedly Monmouth's most famous resident. He was
born March 19, 1848, in his aunt's house on 406 South 3rd Street and lived
in Monmouth during his early childhood years. Earp is an American legend
for his involvement in the infamous O.K. Corral Gunfight at Tombstone, Arizona,
in 1881. He was a United States Marshal for five years. He also earned a
living driving stage coach, prospecting, and before dying in 1929, Earp
was even involved in the motion picture industry. The home of his birthplace
is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been restored with
period furnishings and memorabilia. It is available for tours by calling
(309) 734-6419.
