McCook has been home to a number of famous politicians beginning with Ralph Brooks. Brooks served as Governor of Nebraska from 1958 to September 9, 1960, when he died in office. The next governor from McCook, Frank Morrison, served from 1960 to 1966. In 1990, McCook’s Benjamin Nelson was elected as Nebraska Governor and served two terms.

George Norris is undoubtedly the most famous politician from McCook. Born in 1861, Norris moved to McCook in 1899. He served as a United States Representative from 1902 to 1912 and as a United States Senator from 1912 to 1942. Known as a liberal Republican, Norris’s most noted accomplishments include writing the 20th Amendment and helping to create the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Rural Electrification Act. Norris died on September 2, 1944.
