Lawrence County, Illinois ___________ Driving Directions History Lawrence County was organized in 1821 but its history didn’t start then. The Wabash River Valley had seen Native American, French, and British occupations until 1779 when American soldiers took over. French, Scottish, and Irish settlers came to Lawrence County to pioneer a new life in a new world. Many settled in Lawrenceville, the Lawrence County seat, located on the west bank of the Embarras River. There’s a bounty of history to be found within Lawrence County. Abraham Lincoln first set foot in Illinois when he crossed the Wabash River at Lawrence County in 1830.
