History

In 1666 Louis Joliet named a mound along the Des Plaines River after himself. Over a century and a half later, in 1834, Joliet was laid out as the county seat for Will County. Joliet became known as “The City of Steel and Stone” because of its thriving steel industry and the nearby quarries of limestone. Joliet was also known as the wallpaper capital of America.

More recently, visitors have been coming to Joliet to enjoy the variety of art and history offered here. There are nearly 70 murals, mosaics, and sculptures on display throughout Joliet. Also available is a wealth of restored architecture, museums, and art galleries. Joliet provides visitors with an array of activities ranging from history lessons at a museum to modern art on the streets of Joliet. http://www.cityofjoliet.info/
