History Named for Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, Jefferson City was founded in 1821. Prior to 1821, Jefferson City was known as Lohman’s Landing, a small trading post located on the Missouri River between St. Louis and Kansas City. Five years after being founded, Jefferson City became the Missouri state capital. The first Capitol building was completed in October 1826. Unfortunately it burned in 1837 as did the second Capitol building in 1911. The third and current building was constructed at a cost of 4.5 million dollars and completed in 1918.
