Recreation
Created in 1983, Mark
Twain Lake is Missouri's new reservoir.
The Salt River's repeated flooding birthed the idea of Clarence Cannon
Dam and Mark Twain Lake. The dam has provided flood control as well as
hydro power, recreation, and a water supply to the area. The lake covers
18,000 acres and offers 285 miles of shoreline. Lake activities include
hunting, boating, fishing, cam ping, picnicking, and hiking. Visitors can stop by the
Boudreaux Visitor Center for displays on lake history, area wildlife,
and hydroelectricity. The lake is located 25 miles southwest of Hannibal.
Established in 1924, the Mark Twain State Park was
created in honor of Samuel Clemens. The park is located in the Salt River Hills and borders the Mark Twain Lake.
Its 2,775 acres are a hilly, rugged terrain with impressive limestone bluffs. Park activities include camping,
picnicking, boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking. For more information call (800)334-6946.
