History
Located 40 miles west of Chicago lies the charming, historic
town of Geneva. Its history begins in the 16th century when Native American
Indians inhabited the area. Settlers arrived around 1830 and five years
later the Herrington Family became Geneva’s first permanent settlers.
Geneva was named the county seat for Kane County in 1836. Geneva’s
first ten years produced a courthouse, doctor’s office, post office,
school, and numerous businesses. In 1853 the railroad came to town connecting
Geneva to Chicago and insuring its future existence. Many of Geneva’s
historic homes and businesses were built when Geneva prospered after the
Civil War.
Today, Geneva’s population is nearly 20,000 and this
treasured town is a very popular tourist destination. The scenic Fox River
cuts through Geneva and provides recreational opportunities along with
Geneva’s 50+ parks. Visitors can tour historic Geneva and discover
its past and present by calling (630) 232-6060 for a tour reservation.
