Newton Lake Fish & Wildlife Area offers more than 2,000 acres of Mother Nature at her best. Located about 15 miles southeast of Effingham, Newton Lake provides visitors 22 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Fishing, picnicking, and hunting are other popular activities. This wildlife area also offers a unique look at prairie chickens within its 240-acre prairie chicken sanctuary. For details call (618) 783-3478.

Just a couple of miles from Newton Lake lies Sam Parr State Fish & Wildlife Area. The 183-acre lake offers boating and fishing while the remainder of the wildlife area has hiking and equestrian trails as well as picnic areas and campground sites. Call (618) 783-2661 for more information.
