History

Settlers first arrived in the Effingham area around 1814 while traveling the Old National Road. Pioneers were enticed by the Little Wabash River and the rich, fertile farm land. Effingham was officially founded in 1854 and named the county seat of Effingham County in 1859. The railroad arrived in Effingham during the 1850's and provided a boost in the population and economy. Nearly 100 years later, another mode of transportation, the interstate, provided another boost to Effingham. Interstates 57 and 70 intersect at Effingham and bring more than 30,000 vehicles through Effingham each day.
