The Effingham County Courthouse was built in 1871 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Courthouse maintains its original exterior, one of few courthouses that has not altered its appearance. A monument to Lord Effingham, the county’s namesake, can be found on the courthouse grounds. The Effingham County Courthouse is located at 110 East Jefferson Street.

The Teutopolis Monastery Museum is located 4 miles east of Effingham in Teutopolis. The museum was formerly a monastery that was founded in 1858. Tours cover 32 rooms, the church, and a mausoleum. Among the 2,000 items to be seen are bibles in twelve different languages, books from the 18th century, and a collection of articles used by the friars. Also on display are early pioneer artifacts such as furniture, tools, and household items. Call (217) 857-3586 for additional information.

For a look into farm and rail history, a visit to Altamont’s Ben Winter Museum is in order. This museum of early farm machinery also houses a collection of steam engines and train equipment. The museum has a steam-powered train that runs on a track that travels through the museum’s fruit orchard. To learn more about the Ben Winter Museum call (618) 483-6665.

The Dr. Charles Wright House is a Victorian home that was built in 1889. This beautiful house contains 18 rooms that have been furnished with period pieces and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
