Recreation and history can be found at the Mayslake
Forest Preserve in Oak Brook. This 90-acre preserve consists
of wetlands, lakes, ponds, prairies, and savannas. Hiking, fishing, wildlife
observing, and picnicking are a few activities park guests might enjoy.
St. Francis Retreat House and Mayslake Hall are two historically significant
buildings at the preserve. Mayslake Hall is a 39-room Tudor Revival-style
mansion constructed in 1919 for coal baron, F.S. Peabody. The mansion
was designed by renowned architect, B. Marshall, and is listed as a National
Historic Landmark. For more information call (630) 933-7200. Located off Route 53 in Lisle, Morton
Arboretum covers 1,700 acres in southern DuPage County. Visitors
should start at the 36,000 square feet visitors center that has exhibits,
arboretum information, a gift shop, and a restaurant. The arboretum has
plants from more than 60 countries and each plant is labeled for identification.
Gardens, plant collections, and natural areas can be seen from the 14
