The James Millikin Homestead on 125 North Pine Street has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This Italianate structure was built in 1876 by James and Anna Millikin. The Millikin’s lived there for 34 years. After Anna died, the home was used as an auxiliary hospital during a flu epidemic in 1918. From 1920 to 1969 it served as an art institute. Today the home has been restored to its original appearance and has been furnished with period pieces as well as some of the Millikin’s original belongings. For more information call (217) 422-9003.

Scovill Park is home to the Childrens' Museum of Illinois. The museum offers hands-on exhibits and interactive displays that provoke a child’s thought process and imagination. Exhibit subjects include physics, science, arts and culture. For specific information call (217) 423-5437.

Scovill Zoo is also located in the Scovill Park. The zoo covers 10 acres and is home to more than 500 animals. Visitors can enjoy a train ride through the zoo and catch a glimpse of timber wolves, spider monkeys or kangaroos. Children may also enjoy the zoo’s petting area or a trip to the herpaquarium for reptile viewing. Call (217) 421-7435 for zoo hours.

The Richard J. Oglesby Home is located at 421 Williams Street. This Italianate mansion was built in 1874 for Richard Oglesby. Oglesby served as a United States senator and a three-term Illinois governor. The mansion is furnished with Oglesby family articles and period pieces and contains the original library collection. The Macon County Museum focuses on Macon County history with hundreds of local artifacts. The museum offers a look at a historic prairie village on the museum grounds. The village buildings include Macon County’s first courthouse where Abraham Lincoln practiced law, a schoolhouse, a railroad depot, a 1890's Victorian farmhouse, and a log cabin home. A trip to the Hieronymus Mueller Museum reveals the legacy of Hieronymus Mueller. A gunsmith by trade, Hieronymus Mueller invented a variety of devices and his sons followed in his footsteps. The museum shares the Mueller Family history as well as exhibits of their inventions. For more information call (217) 423-6161.
