Recreation Carthage is home to the World of Wonders Playground (WOW) which is a 10,000-square-foot super playground. Built in 1994 by the residents of Carthage, this interactive wooden playground includes slides, swings, mazes, and various other activities that encourage a child’s imagination. The World of Wonders Playground is located just south of the town square on Adams Street. Nauvoo State Park is a 148-acre park just south of Nauvoo on the Mississippi River. Visitors can enjoy boating and bass fishing on the 13-acre Lake Horton. The park also provides hiking, camping, and picnicking opportunities. The Nauvoo State Park Museum at the park is located in an 1840's house built by early Mormon settlers. It offers artifacts from several periods in history, a wine cellar and press room. For more information about the park call (217) 453-2512. In 1948 the State of Illinois purchased 1,700 acres of land and created Argyle Lake State Park. The State also built a dam to create a 93-acre lake. The park offers equestrian trails and campgrounds for guests and their horses. Other activities include biking, boating, camping, fishing and hunting. The park is open year-round and winter visitors can enjoy ice skating, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, sledding and snowmobiling. For details call (309) 776-3422.
