Famous Residents


Although he was born in Kentucky, John Palmer is one of Carlinville's most famous residents. He moved to Carlinville in 1839 at the age of 22. As a lawyer, he became acquainted with area politicians, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. He held numerous public offices and served in the Civil War, advancing to the rank of a General. After the war, he returned to Carlinville briefly before moving to Springfield where he would later become Governor.

Mary Hunter Austin is another of Carlinville's famous residents. She was born in 1868 at a home in Carlinville. In 1888, she graduated from Carlinville's Blackburn College. Shortly after graduation she moved to California where she married and began her writing career. A well known author and naturalist, Mary Hunter Austin penned 27 books before dying in 1934.
