History

Carbondale was created in November 1852 when three men, Daniel Brush, John Conner, and William Richart purchased 360 acres of land and called it Carbondale. The land, because of its location between Marion and Murphysboro and along the Illinois Central Railroad line, guaranteed that Carbondale would develop into a prosperous community. Within 10 years, Carbondale’s population had reached 1,150 residents and the community was developing into a business and transportation center. In 1866, Carbondale College, now known as Southern Illinois University, was founded.

Today, Carbondale is a busy community that serves as a commercial, industrial, and an educational center for Southern Illinois. The railroad that helped to create Carbondale is still in operation today. Located on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest, Carbondale is a beautiful and historic place to visit.
