Calhoun County ___________________
History Prior to becoming Calhoun County, the wedge of land between the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers was part of the Military Tract, land set aside by the government for veterans of The War of 1812. Calhoun County was established in 1825. From a geographical point of view, Calhoun County is in a world of its own. The northern border is less than 20 miles wide and its east and west borders, formed by the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, come to a point, forming a long peninsula. Although the county is a mere 254 square miles, it produces 1/3 of Illinois' peach crop. The rolling hills are conducive to orchard farming, not to mention providing some of the most spectacular landscape in Illinois. Thousands of acres of land have been set aside as wildlife management areas within Calhoun County. These areas offer hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, and boating on the lakes, ponds, woodlands, and sloughs within the wildlife areas. Calhoun County is a rural and scenic county that offers all the beautiful landscape a person could want. |
