Attractions
There are four ferry services leading into Calhoun County.
The Brussels Ferry crosses the Illinois River from Route
100. This ferry is free and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The
other Illinois River ferry, Kampsville Ferry, is also
free and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It crosses the river
into Calhoun County at Kampsville. The Golden Eagle Ferry
is a genuine paddlewheel boat that crosses the Mississippi River from
St. Charles County, Missouri. Both Mississippi River ferries charge a
fee per car and operate 13-16 hours a day. For more information on the

The Wittmond Hotel was built in 1847 and originally used
as a trading post. It was also used as a stagecoach stop in later years.
Today, the Wittmond Hotel, located in Brussels, is famous for its restaurant
with its family-style food. Besides a hotel and restaurant, the Wittmond
also houses a bar and general store. Call (618) 883-2345 for details.
Kampsville
is home to the Center for American Archeology. Its offices are located
in the Kamp Mansion, a local historic landmark built in 1883 by M.A. Kamp,
founder of Kampsville. The CAA Visitor's Center is also located in a historic
building, Kamp Store, a general store that was the hub of economic life
for the area in the nineteenth century. The Visitor's Center hosts a variety
of exhibits and artifacts that outline prehistoric life in the Illinois
River Valley. Media presentations highlight regional history and the archeological
