Recreation

Johnson-Sauk Trail State Park is located fifteen miles northeast of Bishop Hill. Named after an Illinois state senator, Frank Johnson, and the Sauk Indians who inhabited the area, this state park offers the best in area recreation. With some 1,360 acres, Johnson-Sauk is home to an abundant wildlife population for those who like to hunt. Wild turkey, white-tail deer, pheasants and dove are among the game available at this park. For those who enjoy angling, the 58 acre Johnson Lake and the 3-acre Sauk Trail Pond offer bass, catfish, crappie, northern pike and Muskie. Recreational activities include boating, picnicking, camping, and hiking on 15 miles of trail. The trails also serve park visitors in the winter for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. In addition, winter guests can ice skate and fish on Johnson Lake. The park is also home to one of the largest round barns on the United States. Standing 80 feet high with a diameter of 85 feet, Ryan’s Round Barn is an incredible architectural site. The barn is available for tours by calling the park office at (309) 853-5589.
