History

Historic Bethel German Colony in Bethel, Missouri is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1844, Wilhelm Keil led German settlers from Pennsylvania to 2,560 acres of land in Shelby County, Missouri to pioneer a communal religious community. Although the communal community dissolved in 1880, much of Bethel appears as it did over 150 years ago. There are more than 30 original colony structures still standing and several houses containing furnishings from the 1840's can be visited.
