Recreation

Located on the southern edge of Winterset, Winterset City Park offers visitors a wide variety of activities and attractions.  The Cutler-Donahoe Bridge, one of the six remaining covered bridges in Madison County, was moved to the park in 1970.  Another historic structure is the Clark Tower.  Erected in 1926 as a memorial to Caleb and Ruth Clark, this 25 foot tall tower is a sight to see.  Other activities at Winterset City Park include camping, picnicking, sand volleyball, a hedge maze, and much more.

Clanton Creek Natural Resource Area provides 715 acres of primitive, untouched wilderness.  Visitors have to access this park by foot since there are no interior roads.  There is a 6-acre pond that supplies a healthy population of bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie.  Hiking trails cover more than four miles of scenic park and lead the way to three hike-in camp sites.  Public hunting is also permitted at this park.  Clanton Creek Natural Resource Area is located 9 miles south of Winterset.

Just one mile south of Winterset, Middle River Park offers 80 acres of recreational bliss.  Park visitors can canoe, fish, picnic, hike, cross-country ski, and so much more.  Unique to this park is the maple syrup demonstrations in February.  Park staff collects sap from Black Maples for syrup production.  Tours are available and for more information call (515) 462-3536.

Formerly a state park, the 350-acre Pammel Park is located four miles southwest of Winterset.  This scenic park offers a variety of activities such as camping, cabin rentals, hiking, cross-country skiing, canoeing, and picnicking.  Pammel Park also provides a great place to fish catfish along the Middle River.  Maple syrup demonstrations are held during the month of March.  Visitors can learn about tapping Black Maples, collecting sap, and making syrup.  Syrup is also available for purchase during the demostrations.  Call (515) 462-3536 for additional information.
